History is an excellent teacher with few pupils.

Will Durant
About This Quote

History is an excellent teacher, but it dislikes a large class. It teaches those who will listen, and the rest only the lesson of its own bitter experience. To-day's history is not the history that you read in books at school, or that you have heard from your grandfather or other older people. You have to find out the history of your own country by reading newspapers and magazines, and by listening to conversations. Teachers can tell you a great deal about a particular period, but they cannot teach you from their own experience how to deal with the problems of the present or future.
